What is the Utah Assistive Technology Foundation (UATF)?
The Utah Assistive Technology Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides affordable, low-interest loans to Utahns with disabilities to purchase the assistive technology devices they need. Our goal is to enhance the independence, education, employment, and quality of life for Utahns with disabilities through assistive technology.
What is assistive technology?
Assistive technology is any device that helps a person with a disability achieve a more independent life. Assistive technology include items such as: vans adapted with hand controls and lifts, ramps, home modifications, hearing and vision aids, wheelchairs, scooters, communication boards, Braille equipment and computers with special software and/or hardware.
What kind of loan can I get?
Loans are available to qualified applicants for any kind of assistive technology. UATF loans are signature loans and do not require a down payment. The assistive technology item purchased is NOT used as collateral (with the exception of vehicles and elevators).
Who is eligible?
Utah residents of any age with a disability who need assistive technology are eligible to apply for a loan. Family members may apply on behalf of children or other family members with disabilities.
How much can I borrow?
Most loans are between $500 and $50,000. Your ability to repay the amount requested will affect the amount you can borrow.
What is the interest rate on these loans?
The interest rate is lower than that available from any bank. The rate is half of prime, which changes from time to time, so you should ask for the current rate of interest when you apply for a loan.
How much time will I have to pay off a loan?
Loan terms are set by Zions Bank, but typically must be paid off in 60 months or 5 years for vehicles, and up to 24 to 36 months for devices, depending on the loan amount.
Who approves these loans?
Initial eligibility for the loans is determined by UATF staff. Final loan approval is made by Zions Bank. Loans made through this program are through Zions Bank. The UATF DOES NOT make the loans.
How long will it take to approve and process my application?
After you have supplied the UATF with all of the necessary paper work, please allow approximately 7 to 10 working days from the date you send us your application.
Will my credit report/history be used to determine my eligibility for a loan?
Yes. In order for Zions Bank to make final approval for your loan, they will review your credit history. If you apply for a loan, the bank will obtain your credit report.
If I am currently filing for bankruptcy, can I get a loan?
No.
If I have ever filed for bankruptcy, can I get a loan?
Possibly. Complete a loan application to see if you are currently eligible for a loan through this program. Loan eligibility is determined on a case-by case basis.
Do I need to show proof of disability or justification of assistive technology?
No. The only information you will need, in addition to the completed application forms, is for the device you are purchasing. However, the UATF Board reserves the right to ask for additional information in unusual circumstances.
If approved, how long will it take to get the loan documents and the money?
The bank will contact you to set up an appointment to meet with the bank representative and sign the loan paper work. The loan will be made payable to both you and the vendor.
How do I get an application or more information?
